To get the most obvious one out of the way first, having a cold or flu can give you a sore throat. This, mostly because of breathing problems or dehydration, can become more severe after a night’s sleep.

The only real way to stop this from happening is to stop smoking, at least near the time you sleep. If you have a persistent sore throat and you smoke, especially pain in one part of the throat, go see a doctor.

An incredibly common problem, snoring can also cause a sore throat. When you sleep, the inside of your throat and mouth collapse slightly, which can cause snoring. The vibrations of this can irritate fragile skin in the throat and nose causing pain.
Once again the best solution for this is hydration. Humidifiers and drinking water helps, as can tea or water with honey in it. Other than that there are several snoring prevention devices but most should only be used with the advice of a doctor.
An often ignored cause of throat soreness, acid reflux is caused by stomach acids rising up the back of your throat.
Sometimes there is no other time then when you are sleeping this happens. Obviously this makes it harder to work out what’s happening but there are a few things that can help.
Not eating or smoking near bedtime is a good place to start. Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake may also help reduce acid reflux, but if none of that works sleeping with your upper body tilted up may help.
The best way to do this is to use pillows, you can even buy special wedge shaped pillows for this very purpose. If for some reason you have one, an adjustable bed will also do the trick as well.
One of more potentially serious causes for overnight throat soreness is sleep apnoea. Basically a severe form of what makes you snore, sleep apnoea means you periodically stop breathing while you sleep.
This is caused by movement of soft internal parts of your palate and throat, and can cause day time sleepiness, headaches, and a sore throat.
Sleep Apnoea really is one of those problems that needs to be seen by a doctor. The most effective treatments require medical advice, so if friends or family notice you regularly stopping breathing during the night, see a doctor. However, there are a few things you can do if you have to wait for an appointment or are short on cash.
Like acid reflux, sleep apnoea can be helped by sleeping in a tilted position. A firm pile of pillows can serve this purpose, but as mentioned there are specific items to help with this sleeping position.
